Hundreds had already auditioned, but Lean’s wife at the time, originally from India, traveled with a guru. The greatest achievement of its legendary, Oscar®-winning director, David Lean (1962, Lawrence of Arabia; 1957 The Bridge on the River Kwai), the film stars Peter O’Toole — in his career-making performance — as T. O’Toole reveals how he got the part that turned him into an “overnight sensation” during a featurette from 2012. Based on “Seven Pillars of Wisdom,” Lawrence’s autobiographical account of leading an Arab revolt against Turkey during World War I, Lean’s epic inspired a generation of filmmakers to use the camera as a paintbrush.
The same set of supplements from the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray are ported over for this Ultra HD edition while throwing one small exclusive to boot. Also new in 2012 were The Lure of the Desert: Martin Scorsese on Lawrence of Arabia and the outstanding Lawrence at 50: A Classic Revisited which offers background on the new 4K restoration from Crisp and company (along with rather shocking before and after comparisons).
Sherif Ali and his men are unsure of the arrival of Sheik Auda Abu Tayi (Anthony Quinn) and his tribe. Black level is stunning, there is so much depth to the image, shadow detail is incredible, but it is with the white scale where it really shines – the detail in anything white, clothing, buildings, skies; the sheen of highlights, British uniform buttons, glint of sun on steel, specks of light in eyes - there is no hint of clipping. Unfortunately, it’s only available currently in Sony’s new Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 1 box set, though it will surely be released individually at some point in the future (if not later this year then perhaps in 2021).After he suddenly and unceremoniously loses his job and his girlfriend (Kelly Preston), both his personal and professional careers hit an all-time low.
