Starting with the arrival of Doctor Martin Ellingham, a respected surgeon from London, in the small fishing village of Portwenn in Cornwall, this fish out of water soon discovers that small village life can present some very big problems.
The first, Practice Makes Perfect, adapts the teleplays of series one; the second, Mistletoe and Whine, adapts the teleplays of series two.
It was created by Dominic Minghella [1] developing the character of Dr Martin Bamford from the Nigel Cole comedy film Saving Grace (2000). In contrast, he feels he is performing his duties professionally and by-the-book, not wasting time chatting. In Germany, Doktor Martin, an adaptation of the original series, airs on ZDF with Axel Milberg as Doktor Martin Helling, [23] a surgeon from Berlin.
Series 2 episodes are: 'Old Dogs', 'In Loco', 'Blood Is Thicker', 'Aromatherapy', 'Always On My Mind', 'The Family Way', 'Out of the Woods', and 'Erotomania'.Portwenn itself is brought to life by its rich array of characters including the formidable Sally Tishell who runs the local chemist, Bert Large and his son Al, local policemen Mark Mylow and Joe Penhale, Doc Martin's aunt Dr Ruth Ellingham and, of course, the primary school teacher who fell for the man they thought had no heart, but she found it; Louisa Glasson who would become Louisa Ellingham.
