About this deal
At least two species of bat are known to feed on other bats: the spectral bat ( Vampyrum spectrum), and the ghost bat ( Macroderma gigas). The interfemoral membrane, especially well-developed in insectivorous, carnivorous, and fish-eating bats, is less-well-developed or even absent in the vampires and in fruit- and flower-feeding bats. In a test of 34 bat species from six major families, including major insect- and fruit-eating bat families, all were found to have lost the ability to synthesise it, and this loss may derive from a common bat ancestor, as a single mutation.
The relative proportion of extant bat forelimb digits compared with those of Eocene fossil bats have no significant differences, suggesting that bat wing morphology has been conserved for over fifty million years.Bats also presumably use vision to distinguish day from night and to synchronize their internal clocks with the local cycle of daylight and darkness. This newly described species is considered as one of the oldest known articulated bat skeletons, providing novel insight into the phylogeny of our earliest bat fossils," said Emma Teeling a professor of zoology at University College Dublin in Ireland.
The structure of this traditional bat tattoo may not be a classical skeleton tattoo; you can still turn it into a bat skeleton tattoo! The small bat probably lived in the trees surrounding the lake, flying over the water to hunt insects, says Tim Rietbergen, an evolutionary biologist at the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in the Netherlands and lead author of the study describing the species in the journal PLOS ONE. Groups such as the Bat Conservation International [240] aim to increase awareness of bats' ecological roles and the environmental threats they face. In many cultures, including in Europe, bats are associated with darkness, death, witchcraft, and malevolence.
